Nature Observation: Native Plants & Specialty Crops at Spirit Tree Farms — A Recipe for Natural Healing & Creativity

We’re a small family-owned farm and creative retreat on the banks of the West Chickamauga Creek in Northwest Georgia, Catoosa County. At Spirit Tree Farms, our mission is to inspire, educate, and encourage others to spend time in and build relationships with Mother Earth and our Creator. We invite you to come walk the land and connect to the Creator through His creations. As you learn and expand your Nature observation skills, you’ll connect, find peace, and be healed. Then, let Nature inspire you! We’d love to help you unleash your creativity, in writing, art, music, business, and your personal life.

Our experience at Spirit Tree Farms teaches us daily that, as we listen to Nature and work with our Creator and His creations, we heal, and the Earth heals. The Earth and Nature are our partners in healing. As a creation of a loving Heavenly Father, Mother Earth wants to help us heal ourselves. This happens as we work to heal her and all of Nature, IF we take time to practice Nature observation and connecting, instead of thinking and acting like we know best.

That God/Earth/People connection not only brings folks peace and joy, but unleashes our creativity. At Spirit Tree Farms we teach Nature observation so you can hear and feel and experience God’s love and messages in Nature. As you do, we’ll show you, by example and experience, how to let Nature inspire your own unique creativity.

As part of our efforts to heal the land at Spirit Tree Farms, we’re removing non-native and invasive specieis, so we can grow native plants and native tree saplings like pawpaw, crownbeard (aka frostflower or iceflower), azaleas, shagbark hickory, several types of oak, honey locusts, and more. We also have elderberry, other indigenous plants, and specialty crops including cushaw, okra, leeks, and wild blackberries. We recently added sweet potatoes, cilantro, arugula, mint, Swiss chard, kale, beet greens, basil, rosemary, and oregano.

We hope we can inspire you to make your own sacred space (a portal) on your own property that opens up and connects you to the Earth, to Nature, to God. Create your own area to deliberately partner with the Earth and our Creator (even if it’s a potted plant on your patio)! As you do, you’ll find peace in Nature (the topic of Marnie’s book: “Finding Peace in a Turbulent World: Living in Sacred Nature“, and our presentations on creativity and finding peace by partnering with God and Mother Earth,) as well as ignite your creativity. See you “out there”!

  • Hear Him, See Him In All The World Around Us

Are you sad, in pain, concerned, needing to be healed? Marnie’s Encouragement from the Father quotes Acts 28:27. Throughout Scripture, God teaches us how to be healed by paying attention to Him, and connect with Him through His creations and Nature. All great artists convey themselves through their work. Christ is the ultimate Creator, the…

  • Changing From Being Earth Stewards to Earth Partners: A Lesson In Eco-Humility

Amid all the discussions about alternative fuels, climate change, responsible farming, eco-tourism, biophilia, and more, global citizens are demanding that the human species be “Earth Stewards”. They say that we have a responsibility to use our wisdom, knowledge, and collective thinking to protect, shepherd, defend, and care for Mother Earth and Nature. Isn’t this arrogance,…

  • Removing Invasive Plants

When trying to promote native plants, including wildflowers, native trees, shrubs, and more, one of the first steps is to get rid of non-native, invasive plants. Why? The privets, nandinia, amur honeysuckle, Cherokee rose, and other invasive plants often lead to mono-cultures, lack of bio-diversity, AND they crowd out — and even actively prevent —…

  • What Fruit Will You Reap in the New Year?

Have you thought about what fruit you want to reap in the coming year? As a gardener, you quickly learn that whatever seeds you sow determine what fruit you’re going to get to eat. A lot of work and effort goes into making sure you enjoy that fruit, but you’re not going to reap squash…

  • Authentic Earth Partner: Pick Up Micro-Trash

As an #environmentalist, #NatureLover, and #Biophiliac, I’ve become a big believer in #personalresponsibility as I try to #FindNatureJoy at Spirit Tree Farms. Several friends and relatives model that (I’m thinking Marnie, Gene L. Kuhns, Gene Kuhns, Lynn Kuhns, and others); they create Nature Zen even without thinking about it. Some time ago my daughter ripped…

  • Is Spirit Tree Farms An Ecolodge? No, But …

Ecolodges are, as Forbes Magazine says, “having a moment”. As I excitedly read about this new travel trend, I wondered if our Nature refuge at Spirit Tree Farms could qualify as an ecolodge. To be honest, I think the answer is, sadly, no. But maybe that’s a non-sequitor, macht’s nichts, question. Even with our environmental…

About Us

We, Dave and Marnie Kuhns, are a couple of writers / authors and speakers who conduct creativity, Nature observation and experiences, and business retreats on our property bordering the Chickamauga Battlefield in Northwest Georgia.

As we developed our pollinator-friendly property, growing native plants, our garden soon began producing more than we could consume … especially our signature crops cushaw, okra, and iceflower roots.

More importantly, we discovered that Nature observation and connecting with the Earth healed us, brought us peace and joy, and unleashed us creativity in many forms. We’d love to share what we’ve learned with you!

Ready to Get Back to Nature & Simplify Your Life?

Inc. Magazine and others are calling it The Great Resignation, where corporate employees are leaving their jobs en masse as a result of what’s happening during the 2020-2021 pandemic. David Kuhns says it isn’t The Great Resignation. It’s The Great Reinvention or The Great Refocus. To learn more, visit OurGreatReinvention.com or sign up for a free strategy session with us.
